Director Brooke Shields, a former Roxie Hart, assembled an all-star cast of screen stars for its summer staging of Chicago. The production will star Samantha Barks (Les Miserables) as Velma, True Blood’s Stephen Moyer as Billy Flynn, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) as Matron “Mama” Morton and Drew Carey (The Price Is Right) as Amos. The role of Roxie Hart has yet to be cast. The John Kander and Fred Ebb musical runs July 26 through 28 only.
Set in the 1920s, Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover. Desperate to avoid conviction, she hires Billy Flynn (Moyer), Chicago's slickest criminal lawyer, much to the dismay of her rival cellmate Velma Kelly (Barks).
In addition to the film of Les Miserables, Barks has appeared on the West End in Les Miz and Oliver! Known mainly for his TV and movie credits, Moyer is graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and performed with the National Theatre Wales, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Oxford Stage Company. Lawless made her Broadway debut as Rizzo in 1998 in Grease. Carey appeared on stage in the Hollywood Bowl production of Hairspray. He is best known for his TV series Whose Line Is It Anyway? and The Drew Carey Show.
Chicago holds the record as the longest-running Broadway revival. Directed by Walter Bobbie, the Tony-winning revival is now in its 16th year and stars Amy Spanger, Amra-Faye Wright, Alexander Gemignani, Paul C. Vogt and Christine Pedi.
